ROOTS EXHIBIT IN TELLURIDE, COLORADO

Here are some photos of the installing and the opening reception  of the traveling exhibit "Roots".

The gallery is at the Ah Haa School for the Arts that is situated in the old train station in downtown Telluride.  The fall color made my time there quite exciting.  I had assists from friends Carol Ozaki of Durango and Meredith Nemirov of Ridgeway, Colorado.

CALIFORNIA TRIP

September: A vacation...and musical and art trip.....from downtown L.A. to the beach at Del Mar, California. Saw the L.A. venue of the Melody Gardot U.S. tour in which our son, Mitchell (second from the right) played guitar.  After the U.S. tour, they are off to Europe for 2+ months.  Fabulous!

On this trip I visited my gallery in Bergamot Station, Santa Monica - Lora Schlesinger.  Then when in Del Mar I stopped at UCSD Mandeville Special Collections where 5 paperworks found a home.  The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library was also on my itinerary.  Beach time with a little fog and alot of sun warm waters.

A BOOK ARTS WORKSHOP
WITH
ALICIA McKIM
DENVER BOOK ARTIST, PRINTMAKER & CALLIGRAPHER
*
INTERPRETING MEMORY: AN EXPLORATION OF FAMILY AND CULTURE THROUGH ARTISTS’ BOOKS

In this workshop students will investigate their own perception of family and culture as they generate concepts for an artist’s book through readings, group exercises and viewing historical and contemporary book works.

Each participant will create their own artist’s book through a guided exploration that incorporates book design, narrative and techniques for reproducing word and image.

We will be working with a modified version of the Secret Belgian Binding, which lends itself well to the integration of small objects and sewing single pages of varying size together.

This workshop is for anyone interested in creating an artist’s book, whether in digital form or executed entirely by hand.

Artists' Market participation

Here are a few examples of new collage that will be shown at the outdoor Artists' Market in Durango near my home and studio.  This series of collage are framed and presented in vintage photo folders.  An outdoor market setting is not my usual venue for showing my collage and mixed media art but the event should be fun and help support the arts in the local community.

ADDENDUM TO WINTER PRESSING BOOK

I have just added an Addendum to my Winter Pressing Book that documented my paper buried under winter snow from 1983 to 2009.  Since I am continuing this ritual (3 Pressings to date),  I have designed the Addendum as an unbound collection.

New Work

Each year I continue my ritual of burying paper under winter snows.  The result is a print documentation of that particular winter - the amount of moisture, etc.  The Winter Pressing
2011-12 recorded 55" of snowfall in the forest adjacent to my studio.

This Pressing then took the form of an artists' book enclosed in a box.
The binding is simply 2 leather threads running through single sheet pages.  The information about this Pressing is recorded on the first few pages (paper laid December 1 2011 and harvested March 20, 2012) and then a quote from John Muir is placed on the remaining pages..."I went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown for going out I found, was really going in. "

 Language Bound

 Winter Pressing 2007-08
My artists' books Language Bound and Winter Pressing 2007-08 have recently been placed in the Special Collections of the Penrose Library at the University of Denver.  Vamp and Tramp Booksellers (Vicky and Bill Stewart) facilitated this placement as they have with so much of my work.  I appreciate this news since 3 other artists' books of mine are in that collection.
